Curated by btp

Technical amendments to the Good Cause Eviction Law (enacted April 2024) to strengthen tenant protections and clarify rent increase challenge thresholds under Article 6-A RPL.

What it does

This bill makes technical corrections to New York's Good Cause Eviction Law, which took effect as part of the FY2024 budget in April 2024.

Good Cause Eviction gives eligible tenants:

  • Guaranteed lease renewals and protection from no-reason evictions
  • The right to challenge rent hikes above the lower of 10% or CPI+5% — the DHCR NYC-area figure was 8.79% as of April 2025

The technical fix clarifies which tenants are covered and how those rent-increase thresholds are calculated, closing gaps that have made the protections harder to enforce.
